Is a Raft Covered by Boat and Watercraft Insurance?

Grand Rapids gets its name from 300-yard wide rapids that could once carry riders ten to fifteen feet in the air for a good mile along the Grand River. Unfortunately for thrill seekers, these rapids were submerged by the construction of numerous dams in 1836. Riding the river may be a little calmer than it was when fur traders came to build the town in pioneer days. And more civilized, as there’s no such thing as peril-free rafting. Not only is there modern equipment to better ensure survival (such as life vests), but your craft may be covered by insurance.

Can You Really Get Insurance for a Raft?

Your raft may file under nonmotorized boat insurance. Any watercraft that doesn’t depend on motor propulsion, such as a sailboat, canoe, kayak or dinghy would likewise be covered. Do keep in mind that this is not automatically covered by your homeowner’s insurance and even if it is, it may be at a minimum. This means you may need separate boat and watercraft insurance for your raft. Coverage can include uninsured boater protection, medical payments, liability, comprehensive and collision. You are not required to get nonmotorized boat insurance, but it’s a good thing to have, just in case. For example, if you capsize, crash into another craft or have an accident that requires hospitalization, insurance will cover incurred expenses.
